For nearly two decades, I've had the privilege of meeting some of the most resilient and resourceful small businesses in New Zealand. Builders, butchers, cleaners, mechanics, landscapers. People who do extraordinary work with their hands and their word. But recently, a number stopped me in my tracks.

Nearly half of New Zealand's small businesses have no meaningful online presence. No website. No Google listing. Nothing that tells a potential customer they exist, what they do, or whether they can be trusted.

It's easy, particularly for those of us who live in the digital world, to assume everyone is online. We network on LinkedIn. We share insights. We apply for things digitally. But a huge number of established, capable businesses are not operating in that space at all.

This isn't about intelligence or work ethic.
It's about digital confidence.

Historically, referrals were enough. A handshake, a good job, another recommendation. But the world has changed. Today, even a referral ends with a Google search. And when customers search and find nothing, many quietly move on.

The plumber who's been in business for 25 years. The hairdresser with a loyal client base. The landscape gardener everyone in the neighbourhood knows. They're all doing great work. But to anyone searching online, they don't exist.

The Invisible Economy

This isn't just a problem for individual businesses. It's a structural issue for the country. Policy decisions, grants, economic surveys, business support programmes: they almost all rely on digital channels. If you're not online, you're not being counted, consulted, or supported.
